The composition is dominated by a massive, twisting trunk covered in knots, burls, scars, and deeply textured bark, each surface rendered with meticulous linework. From the central trunk, heavy limbs extend outward while finer branches and long, drooping leaves create a delicate veil around the tree.
Wilson contrasts the dense, almost tactile detail of the trunk with the much lighter treatment of the surrounding foliage. The willow leaves are drawn with exceptionally fine, repeated marks, giving them an airy, translucent quality and allowing large areas of white paper to remain visible. This contrast between weight and delicacy gives the composition a strong sense of balance.
The tree’s irregular growth becomes the principal subject. Bulbous formations and twisting ridges suggest age, endurance, and continual adaptation, while the upward and outward movement of the branches reinforces the title Reach. The drawing invites close inspection, revealing an extraordinary variety of textures within the bark and emphasizing the individuality of the tree.
Through precise fineliner work and a restrained monochromatic palette, Anna Wilson transforms the familiar form of a willow into a study of structure, resilience, and organic complexity. Reach has both an observational and imaginative quality, presenting the tree not simply as part of a landscape but as a monumental living form shaped by time.
