Biography

"I hope that each viewer who sees my works is able to leave with a sense of comfort and familiarity and can project their own memories of time and place onto each of my drawings."

Anna Wilson is a Canadian contemporary artist based in London, Ontario, known for intricate fineliner drawings that explore architecture, interiors, furniture, memory, and the emotional connection between people and the spaces they inhabit. Born and raised in the London area, Wilson graduated from Western University in 2018, where she studied Visual Art and Psychology. Her detailed architectural drawings combine observation and imagination, transforming familiar buildings, rooms, furnishings, animals, and domestic objects into complex fictional environments that evoke comfort, nostalgia, and a sense of place.

From 2018 to 2022, Wilson worked as an artist in residence at the TAP Centre for Creativity in London, Ontario. She initially joined TAP through its Emerging Artists Studio Program following her graduation from Western University and later continued there as a resident artist. The experience provided Wilson with studio space, mentorship, an artistic community, and opportunities to exhibit her work while she developed the distinctive drawing practice for which she is now recognized. Her first solo exhibition was held in June 2019, and her work has since been exhibited in London, Toronto, Montreal, Nova Scotia, and elsewhere in Canada.

Wilson works exclusively with  0.05 and 0.03 fineliner pens. Her large, highly detailed drawings manipulate perspective and combine architectural structures, interior spaces, furniture, and personal imagery. Rather than simply reproducing an existing room or building, she layers and reconstructs these elements to create entirely new environments. Central to her practice is what she describes as the "between," an imagined architectural space occupying the ambiguous territory between interior and exterior.

Through these multilayered compositions, Anna Wilson investigates how architecture and everyday objects become connected to memory. Older homes, antique furniture, familiar rooms, and personal possessions are transformed from functional objects into carriers of emotional experience. Her drawings invite viewers to recognize fragments that may remind them of their own homes, childhoods, families, or places they have known, allowing individual memories to become part of the experience of the artwork.

Wilson's imagery is also deeply influenced by growing up on a family farm. Well-loved furniture, farm buildings, sunflowers, and animals including cats, dogs, sheep, and chickens regularly provide inspiration. These personal elements appear within her imagined interiors alongside architectural forms drawn from real buildings and local surroundings. Although the compositions begin with a general idea, Wilson allows them to develop spontaneously. Because fineliner pen is permanent, unexpected marks and changes become incorporated into the evolving drawing, and the completed work can differ substantially from her original plan.

The density and precision of Wilson's drawing are balanced by an underlying sense of warmth and familiarity. Her compositions are filled with objects and spaces that appear simultaneously recognizable and impossible, bringing multiple viewpoints and locations together within a single image. Wilson uses architectural drawing not simply to describe physical space but to explore how spaces are remembered, imagined, and emotionally experienced.
