Jack Beder’s Houses Facing Park (St. Louis Square) depicts a row of colourful Montreal houses in winter, viewed across a snow-lined street. The façades are tightly packed and richly varied, with red brick, ochre, cream, grey and green creating a lively architectural rhythm. A bay window at the far left and the steeply pitched roofs and cornices give the streetscape a distinctly older Montreal character.
Bare tree branches stretch across the upper part of the composition, partially screening the houses and reinforcing the winter setting. Two parked cars occupy the foreground, while snowbanks along the curb and patches of slush on the roadway add to the everyday urban atmosphere.
Beder uses loose, energetic brushwork and strong colour contrasts to animate the scene. The muted whites and blues of the snow are set against saturated reds, oranges, greens and yellows, making the houses feel especially vivid against the pale winter light.
The painting captures the character of the city of Montreal around St. Louis Square, combining architecture, snow, traffic and street trees into a colourful portrait of urban winter life.
