Jack Beder’s Place Royal depicts a snow-covered urban square in Montreal, centered on a tall monument rising in front of a large classical building. Cars line the street and edge the square, while older commercial and residential buildings frame the scene on both sides.
The winter setting is conveyed through broad passages of white snow, cool blue-grey shadows, and dark wet pavement. Beder uses stronger accents of turquoise, yellow, red, and orange in the cars, signs, and storefronts to enliven the otherwise subdued city palette.
The composition balances architecture and everyday street activity. The monument creates a strong vertical focus, while the curving roadway at right leads the eye deeper into the city. Bare trees, parked cars, utility poles, and tightly grouped buildings give the scene an immediate sense of place.
Beder’s pastel handling is direct and expressive, with visible strokes and simplified forms that emphasize atmosphere over precise architectural detail. The result is a lively winter view of the city of Montreal, combining historic architecture with the movement and colour of daily urban life.
