Jack Beder’s End of Napoleon Street depicts a quiet residential street in the city of Montreal during winter, framed by tightly packed houses painted in vivid colour. A bright red building dominates the centre of the composition, flanked by yellow, cream and brick façades, while snow blankets the roadway and sidewalks.
Bare trees and utility poles rise through the scene, their dark vertical lines contrasting with the colourful architecture. A few parked cars add an everyday urban note, while curving tire tracks lead the eye through the snow-covered street toward the central houses.
Beder’s handling is loose and expressive, with visible brushwork throughout the snow, buildings and sky. The cool whites, blues and greys of winter are energized by strong passages of red, green, orange and yellow, giving the scene a lively rhythm despite the stillness of the season.
The painting captures the character of an older Montreal neighbourhood in winter, combining familiar city architecture with Beder’s strong interest in colour, structure and urban atmosphere.
