Kirsten Bergmann’s Sunset Study is an atmospheric rural landscape centred on the drama of evening light. A quiet country road runs into the distance along the left side of the composition, while a broad golden field stretches across the right. Above, large luminous clouds rise across the sky, painted in soft lavender, blue, cream and peach tones that suggest the last warm light of day.

The painting’s strength lies in its balance between openness and structure. The road draws the viewer inward, the field provides a warm horizontal expanse, and the dark trees at the edges anchor the scene. The sky dominates the work, giving it a sense of scale and quiet grandeur.

Bergmann handles the clouds with soft, blended transitions, creating volume and atmosphere without overworking the detail. The lower landscape is darker and more restrained, allowing the glowing sky to become the emotional centre of the painting. The golden field and fading light suggest late summer or early autumn, when the land has a dry, harvest-season warmth.
