Kirsten Bergmann’s Grundy Swan Lake depicts a quiet wetland landscape framed by the dense coniferous forest of northern Ontario. A broad meadow of grasses and low vegetation fills the foreground, scattered with small white tufts that suggest cotton grass or other wetland plants. Beyond, layers of spruce and pine rise in varying shades of deep green, olive and yellow-green, creating a rich sense of depth across the forest edge.

Several tall, bare trunks punctuate the composition, their thin silhouettes reaching dramatically into the pale, open sky. These dead trees provide a striking contrast to the vigorous surrounding evergreens and introduce a sense of the natural cycles of growth and decay within the landscape. Bergmann uses the irregular shapes of the trees to keep the scene natural and untamed rather than picturesque or carefully ordered.

Light plays an important role throughout the painting. The darkest greens are concentrated along the forest interior, while brighter foliage catches the light around the clearing and draws the eye toward the centre of the composition. The softly rendered sky, almost luminous in comparison with the darker land below, gives the scene an expansive and slightly atmospheric quality.

Rather than emphasizing a dramatic landmark, Bergmann focuses on the character of the northern wetland itself. Grundy Swan Lake captures the stillness, dense vegetation and subtle variations of light found around Swan Lake in the Grundy Lake region, presenting the landscape as a secluded and largely untouched natural environment.
