Cottages on Lake by Leonard Hutchinson is a 5.25 x 7.75 inch wood engraving on paper that is protected by museum glass and signed in the bottom right corner. Done in completely black ink, the piece depicts two cabins sitting side by side, nestled along a body of water. Hutchinson uses a cascade of horizontal lines to portray the still waters of the bordering lake, adding movement to the piece and drawing the eye across the composition. Large blocks of pure black add a mysterious quality to the image, as if the houses are shrouded in shadow.
Made by cutting an image into a piece of wood, covering it in ink and then printing it onto a surface, this piece is the fifth in the series of fifty original wood engravings of Cottages on Lake by Leonard Hutchinson.
