Maud Lewis, Two Deer shows a pair of deer standing on a snowy path, their backs turned as they move quietly toward a distant village. Framed by tall black tree trunks and dense green evergreens, the animals become the calm focus of the composition. Beyond them, bright red buildings and a white church sit at the foot of rolling dark green hills, while a vivid yellow-and-orange sky suggests sunset and fills the winter scene with surprising warmth.
The painting has the directness and charm that define Maud Lewis’s work. She uses flat areas of bright colour, simple outlines, and repeating shapes to create a scene that feels both decorative and deeply inviting. The deer tracks lead the eye into the picture, and the contrast between the cool blue shadows in the snow and the glowing sky gives the image a cheerful, almost storybook quality. Although the setting is wintry, the painting feels lively and affectionate rather than cold, turning an ordinary rural view into something memorable and full of wonder.
