The Winter Trail by Ernest Lindner is a 14 x 20 inch oil on board that was produced in 1937 and signed in the bottom left corner. It is also signed, titled and dated May 1st, 1937 on the reverse and has the words “ To our good friend Jack Beardly, Bodil and Ernest” inscribed on it.
The piece depicts a serene winter landscape. Spindly pine trees frame the composition as one looks out over a frozen lake. Tracks lead out onto the ice where the small silhouette of a dog sled can be seen, cast in the warm light of the sun. The sky is painted in sweeping strokes of pastel pink and powder blue, adding a whimsical quality to the piece. Lindner captures the vastness of the surrounding space as seen from the shelter of the trees. He uses a strong contrast between light and dark to add a sense of depth to the scene.
The Winter Trail spent time at Hodgins Art Auctions in Calgary before being added to the Rookleys collection.
