The forms suggest poppies emerging and dissolving within the surface rather than being rendered as clearly defined flowers.
The upper half is dominated by intense red and orange passages that appear to bloom outward, while softer pink areas open through the centre of the composition. Along the right side, cool turquoise and blue create a strong counterbalance to the warmer colours, giving the painting a sense of expansion and movement.
Drum builds the surface through layered washes, staining, scraping and richly textured passages of pigment. Areas of colour appear to merge, separate and re-form, creating the impression of organic growth and transformation. The title Poppy Morphogenic Field is especially appropriate, as the painting seems to capture flowers not as fixed objects but as forms continually developing within a shifting field of colour.
