Rather than describing the scene with precise botanical detail, Drum builds the composition through vigorous, layered strokes of green, yellow, blue, violet and touches of pink and red.
The hanging wisteria forms a broad horizontal canopy across the upper half of the painting, its twisting dark branches and trailing blossoms creating a lively network of movement. Beneath it, cooler passages of blue, lavender and soft grey suggest shaded walls, open space, or atmospheric depth, allowing the brighter foliage to stand out more strongly.
The painting has an immersive quality, with little emphasis on conventional perspective. Instead, colour and brushwork carry the composition. The greens range from deep emerald to acidic yellow-green, while the background shifts through violet, cobalt and pale blue, giving the work a shimmering, almost dreamlike light.
Drum’s loose handling and saturated palette turn the garden into something more emotional than descriptive. Wisteria Summer conveys the sensation of standing beneath heavy flowering vines at the height of the season, surrounded by colour, movement and filtered summer light.
