The foreground is dense with grasses and reeds, while a pair of cows at left provide the principal focal point within the pastoral setting.
Barnsley builds the composition with rich greens, ochres and deep browns, contrasting the heavy vegetation with a pale, cloud-filled sky. Trees form a dark band across the middle distance, while lighter foliage near the centre breaks up the mass and gives the scene greater depth.
The handling is energetic and painterly, particularly in the grasses, foliage and sky, where short, visible brushstrokes create movement and texture. The cattle are rendered more loosely, integrated naturally into the landscape rather than treated as formal subjects.
The painting has a distinctly pastoral character, capturing the cultivated countryside around Saint-Vaast with an emphasis on vegetation, atmosphere and everyday rural life.
