Beyond them, a village of pale buildings with red-tiled roofs gathers at the foot of a long volcanic ridge, while cultivated fields, orchards, and scattered trees extend across the valley. The twin peaks rising at the left give the landscape a distinctive silhouette, and distant blue mountains carry the view toward the horizon.
Beau uses softened contours and layered passages of green, violet, ochre, blue, and rust to convey the warm, atmospheric character of the Ardèche countryside. The small figures introduce a quiet human presence and provide scale, while the glowing fields and streaked sky give the composition a gentle sense of evening tranquillity.
