A large weathered farmhouse with a steep roof and prominent red-brick chimney rises behind the yard, while flowering plants and dense summer foliage soften the architecture. Freshly washed clothing hangs across a line in the centre of the composition, introducing a quiet sense of domestic activity.
In the foreground, a rough wooden gate opens through a low stone wall toward the house. Large rocks, patches of grass, and cultivated plants give the scene an informal, lived-in character. Gagen uses transparent washes of green, ochre, brown, violet, and pale blue to capture the warmth and brightness of a summer day, while loose brushwork conveys the texture of foliage, timber, stone, and sunlit fabric.
