David Drum’s Burlington Iris Garden is a vibrant celebration of a garden in full bloom, built through energetic colour and richly textured brushwork. Tall irises rise from dense green foliage across the foreground, their deep violet, indigo, lavender, cream and pink blossoms punctuating the composition like flashes of colour within the grass.

The garden gradually becomes lighter toward the upper half of the painting, where scattered pale flowers and warm red accents appear against luminous yellow-greens and a broad expanse of brilliant blue. Rather than describing each plant precisely, Drum uses thick, expressive strokes and touches of impasto to convey the abundance and movement of the garden. Stems, leaves and petals seem to merge into a continuous field of colour, giving the scene an immersive, almost abstract quality.

The strong contrast between the saturated blue background and the luxuriant greens gives the painting exceptional brightness, while the darker purple irises anchor the foreground. Burlington Iris Garden captures the exuberance of a cultivated summer garden at its peak, emphasizing light, colour and the rhythmic repetition of flowers rather than strict botanical detail.
