Ontario St. Backyards by Albert Franck is an 11.5 x 10.25 oil signed and dated bottom right. Franck was well known for his Toronto streetscapes that capture the essence of its neighbourhoods. With the back of the house in view, we see into the life of two places of habitation. The main house blinds cover the round framed windows in view, with ornamentations enhancing the frame - a slight nod to the Victorian era. The warm, welcoming tones of dwellings flatter the fallen snow that dusts the rooves, ground, and neighbouring trees. The leaf-bare trees and fence frame the backyard of Ontario Street, leaving room for walking or hosting, and a storage shed painted olive green. An infrequent growth of leaves hangs in the top right corner, bearing the cold. Mini details such as the house's frames, wooden fence, neighbour’s storage, and storage windows can be seen from this private perspective. The house and the storage frames are steady, awaiting the course of aging that’ll come from years of weather and use. Franck’s iconic oil and watercolour paintings preserve the memory of a city that once was.
