The Water Hole, created around 1935. Woodcut is a relief printing technique in printmaking where an artist carves an image into the surface of a block of wood, with the printing parts remaining level with the surface while the non-printing parts are removed.

In Hutchinson's The Water Hole, the composition features a rural scene with a strong contrast between the dark and light areas, which is typical of woodcut prints due to the nature of the technique. The image depicts a fenced water hole or trough, possibly for livestock, with a broken fence leading towards a wooden structure that might be a barn or farmhouse. The deep shadows and the bold use of black ink give the image a dramatic and somewhat rustic feel.

The sky is represented with the wood grain, showing through as white lines, a characteristic detail that adds texture and movement to the scene. The trees and the architectural elements are stylized with strong lines and forms, conveying a sense of solidity and permanence.

This print is a fine example of Hutchinson's work, capturing a slice of rural life with a keen sense of form and an expressive use of the woodcut medium. The title of the work and the artist's name are written at the bottom, which helps to identify the piece and its creator.
