September by Kazuo Nakamura is a dark and deeply meditative 17 x 20.75 inch oil on board piece. Painted in 1961, September is a portrayal of a forest landscape in the dead of night. Tall skinny trees stand in the foreground, reaching towards the top of the canvas. As Kazuo chose to render the tree foliage in a green of matching depth to that of the navy blue sky; the trees are barely distinguishable from the background they are set against.
Making use of a conservative colour palette of only blue and green further contributes to the low visibility of the subjects depicted as well as the unity of the piece. Viewers must spend a generous amount of time looking into the painting to make out the landscape seemingly buried within, one cannot be immediately sure what looms within the forest.
Gallery labels found on the reverse of the painting preserve its provenance, currently in the possession of Rookleys Canadian Art Gallery, and previously in that of the National Council of Jewish Women then once again prior in a private collection in Toronto
