Goodridge Roberts’ Windy Summer Day presents a windswept view of Georgian Bay, where rocky shores, scattered pines, and open blue water create one of Ontario’s most distinctive landscapes. Whitecaps break across the bay while the trees lean and twist in the breeze, giving the scene a strong sense of movement and changing weather.

Roberts uses loose, vigorous brushwork throughout, particularly in the water, trees, and exposed granite. Rich greens and deep blues are balanced by warm ochres, greys, and touches of orange in the foreground, while the broad pale sky opens the composition and adds a sense of distance. The irregular Georgian Bay shoreline leads the eye across the water toward low wooded islands and rocky outcrops in the distance.

Rather than emphasizing precise detail, Roberts captures the character of Georgian Bay through its wind, light, rugged terrain, and constantly moving water. The energetic handling and simplified forms give the painting the immediacy of a summer day experienced directly in the landscape.
