Near Maple, ON by Albert Franck is a 16 x 20 inch oil on board produced in 1954 and signed and dated in the bottom right corner. The date of February 1954 and the artist’s signature are also featured on the reverse, along with the original price of $100. The painting depicts a snowy winter scene in Northern Ontario. Rolling hills span off into the distance speckled with pine trees and rust coloured maples. A stray from Franck’s usual subject matter of Toronto streetscapes, this piece is a unique part of his oeuvre. He uses a combination of warm and cool tones to set the scene. Vertical lines in the foreground draw the eye into the piece and off into the distance, the expanse of snow and trees seemingly carrying on forever. Near Maple, ON conveys a sense of peace and solitude as the viewer gazes out over the expanse of land and into the quiet distance.
