View of the Bay, Late Summer by George Thomson is a 10 x 12 inch oil on panel produced circa 1940 and signed in the bottom right corner. This simple landscape painting depicts the shores of a freshwater lake in Canada on a warm, sunny day in August. The calm, clear blue water is framed by trees as the viewer looks out over the composition. An island speckled with pines can be seen on the bay and rolling hills off further in the distance. Thomson uses a palette dominated by cool tones and a strong contrast between light and dark in this piece. He strips the elements down to their basic forms, capturing the feeling of the location rather than trying to portray realism.
This painting was on display at Hodgins in Calgary and The Little Gallery in Victoria before becoming part of the Rookleys collection.
