Tom Roberts’ Lighthouse at Hamilton Bay depicts the Burlington Canal Main Lighthouse, standing at the entrance to Hamilton Harbour at the western end of Lake Ontario. Built in the nineteenth century on the Hamilton Beach strip, the lighthouse guided vessels through the Burlington Canal between Lake Ontario and the sheltered waters historically known as Burlington Bay, later Hamilton Harbour. The setting was an important shipping route for the growing industrial cities of Hamilton and Burlington.

The tall white lighthouse dominates the composition, rising dramatically against a turbulent, cloud-filled sky. Its pale masonry catches the sunlight while the opposite side falls into cool blue-grey shadow. The red lantern room provides a vivid accent near the top of the tower. At its base, Roberts includes a cluster of small service buildings and sheds painted in green, red, and ochre, along with several figures whose presence gives a sense of scale and daily activity around the light station.

In the foreground, waves break energetically against the rocky shoreline. Broad strokes of turquoise, blue, white, and grey convey the movement of the water, while dark rocks anchor the lower part of the composition. Beyond the lighthouse, the blue waters of Hamilton Harbour stretch toward the horizon.

Roberts uses vigorous, visible brushwork throughout, particularly in the enormous banks of cumulus clouds that fill much of the sky. Patches of brilliant blue between the clouds suggest rapidly changing weather and strong lakeside light. The solidity of the lighthouse contrasts with the movement of the water and sky, giving the scene both monumentality and immediacy. Lighthouse at Hamilton Bay captures not only a recognizable local landmark but also the exposed maritime character of the Burlington Canal and Hamilton Harbour waterfront.
