Goodridge Roberts’ Waiting is a spare, elegant figure study reduced to a few assured black lines on warm-toned paper. The seated man, wearing a brimmed hat and jacket, leans back with one arm draped over the chair, his posture conveying ease, patience, and quiet detachment. His head turns slightly to the side, giving the impression that he is absorbed in thought or simply passing time.

The economy of means is what gives Waiting its strength. Roberts uses contour almost alone, allowing the figure to emerge through fluid, uninterrupted outlines rather than modelling or detail. The broad planes of the chair and table-like form in the foreground create a simple structural framework, while the open paper surrounding the figure heightens the sense of stillness and isolation.

In Goodridge Roberts’ Waiting, the casual pose feels both modern and intimate. The drawing has the immediacy of a quick observation, yet it is carefully balanced, with the angular furniture set against the relaxed, slightly slouched figure. The result is a composition that feels understated, human, and quietly expressive.
