Summer by the Water by Goodridge Roberts is a 15 x 18 inch oil on masonite that was produced circa 1965 and signed in the bottom right corner. It has Joan Roberts inventory #1820 on the reverse.
The painting depicts a sunny day on the shores of a lake in Ontario. Pine trees line the coast, giving way to glistening water and a brilliant blue sky beyond. Roberts paints en plein air and uses loose, gestural brush strokes combined with a cool colour palette to portray the scene. This technique gives the impression of a breeze blowing through the composition, swaying the branches of the trees and the tall blades of grass that surround them.
