Blueberry Island, Georgian Bay by Doris McCarthy is a 11.5 x 13.5 inch oil on panel produced in 1939 and signed in the bottom left corner. The piece is also titled and dated on the reverse. The painting depicts the iconic shoreline of Georgian Bay, known for its rocky coast and jack pines. Crystal blue water surrounds the rocks and a small island dotted with trees can be seen in the distance. McCarthy is able to beautifully capture the smooth surface of the rockface and the way the sun filters through its cracks. She uses a strong contrast between light and dark to emphasize the unique shapes of the stones, her use of complimentary colours to portray the shadows and crevices accentuating them even further.
The piece comes to Rookleys from Waddington’s in Toronto.
