Winter on Harbord Street by John Kasyn is a 7 x 11 inch watercolour on paper that was produced in 1976 and is protected by museum glass. The piece is signed and dated in the bottom right corner. An artist label on the reverse is also titled and features the original price of $250. The painting depicts a backlane in downtown Toronto in the wintertime. Kasyn uses a variety of watercolour techniques to capture the essence of the neighborhood in exquisite detail. Each home has a unique texture and pattern. Snow seems to literally hang off the eavestroughs along the roofs. Bare branches of trees hang over the rows of houses, their dark silhouettes dissecting the composition. Kasyn uses deep browns and muted earth tones to create this somber yet nostalgic streetscape, a theme he was well-known for.
