Francesco Iacurto (September 1, 1908 - July 7, 2001), a celebrated Canadian artist born in Montreal to a family with Italian roots, began his artistic education at the age of 12 when he started studying painting at the Monument National in Montreal. Recognized for his talent early on, Iacurto received a scholarship in 1928 to attend the prestigious Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Montreal, where he completed his teacher’s training.

Iacurto's quest for artistic excellence led him to Europe, supported by a Quebec Provincial Government scholarship, where he honed his skills at the Academie de La Grande Chaumiere and the Colarossi in Paris. Upon returning to Canada, he embarked on a distinguished career in education, teaching at the Montreal Arts and Trades School and later for the Catholic School Commission.

In the late 1930s, Iacurto moved to Quebec City, a place that profoundly influenced his artistic work. He became renowned for his vivid portrayals of the city, its landscapes, and its people. The following year, he further captivated the art world with his oil paintings depicting the essence of Quebec City.

Francesco Iacurto's artistic style was characterized by a fierce defense of orthodox principles in the teaching and practicing of the arts. He was considered one of the most important figurative painters of his generation, known for his honesty, abundant use of texture, and incredible treatment of light. His intelligent conception and sharp composition brought pleasure to many viewers over the last century. In his best works, the colour is simply sumptuous, and his mastery of perspective creates a dynamic depth that captivates the eye.

Francesco Iacurto passed away in Sainte-Foy at the age of 93 on July 7, 2001, leaving behind a timeless collection of masterful works that continue to resonate with audiences worldwide.
