Robert Ford Gagen’s Rocks is a watercolour depicting a rugged Canadian landscape shaped by exposed granite, open grassland, and scattered evergreens. Large rounded boulders dominate the foreground, their cool blue-grey surfaces broken by deep violet shadows and touches of rust, brown, and green. Behind them, a rocky ridge rises across the composition, topped by a sparse group of windswept trees.

Gagen uses loose, transparent washes and energetic brushwork to suggest the varied textures of stone, moss, and wild vegetation. The pale, cloud-filled sky gives the scene an expansive feeling, while several small birds introduce movement above the otherwise quiet terrain. The broad forms, subdued colours, and weathered rock formations convey the enduring character of the Canadian Shield.
