Rocky Shoreline by Robert Ford Gagen is a 9.5 x 13.5 inch watercolour on paper produced in 1919 and is protected under museum glass. This incredible seascape perfectly demonstrates Gagen’s ability to capture the movement of water in his work. It depicts a rugged ocean coastline, huge waves crashing upon the shore. There is a strong contrast between the detailed rock formations in the foreground and the white capped waves behind them adding depth to the piece. Gagen uses subtle washes in the background to create an atmospheric effect, as if the cliffs are shrouded in mist off into the distance.
