Charles Comfort’s Approaching Storm depicts a rugged rural landscape beneath a massive, turbulent sky. Dark, wind-bent trees and slender bare trunks rise against sweeping blue-grey storm clouds, while rolling fields and winding bands of pale ground lead into the distance. Rust-red and ochre vegetation punctuates the otherwise cool palette, suggesting the colours of late autumn. Comfort’s vigorous washes, sharp contrasts and expressive brushwork give the scene a powerful sense of movement, as the landscape seems to brace itself for the approaching storm.
