Stone Bridge by artist William Edwin Atkinson (1862-1926) is a 5.5 x 8.8 inch watercolour on paper that depicts a quiet forest landscape with a stone bridge off in the distance and a river running through it. A strong shadow is cast upon the piece, creating a moody feeling. The overhanging trees on either side of the composition draw the viewer’s eye deep into the scene. This small watercolour is displayed in an ornate frame and signed by the artist in the bottom right corner.
Atkinson employs the use of wet on wet and a predominantly muted colour palette to play into the moodiness of the piece. His painting style is characterized by a blend of realism and impressionism; being best known for his skill for capturing the natural beauty of rural scenes.
Atkinson’s work is displayed in the National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa as well as the Government of Ontario Art Collection in Toronto. This piece, Stone Bridge, is currently on display at our gallery in Ridgeway, Ontario.
