Joe Norris’s Sightseeing is a lively, imaginative view of Nova Scotia wilderness, combining open blue water, bright autumn grasses, birds, and mauve-pink rock formations in a distinctly personal folk-art style. A lone figure rows a red boat across the lake at left, while seagulls perch on the shoreline, Canada geese gather in the foreground, and several tall herons animate the golden marsh. In the distance, two dark birds rest on a rocky islet, adding another note of quiet observation to the scene.

The painting has the simplified forms, bold colour, and flattened perspective that define Joe Norris’s work. Rather than aiming for realism, he arranges the landscape decoratively, balancing the cool blues of the water and sky against vivid greens, oranges, and purples. The result is both playful and serene, turning a sightseeing excursion into a joyful celebration of coastal nature and bird life. It also has the affectionate, storybook quality that makes Norris’s paintings so memorable.
