This watercolour by Willard M. Mitchell depicts Cape Trinity Rock on the historic Saguenay River in Quebec, viewed from Cape Eternity. The composition emphasizes the immense scale of the blue-white cliff face rising above the river, with a small steamer passing below to show the dramatic height of the rock. Dark evergreens and autumn-toned foliage frame the foreground, while birds in the pale sky and distant shoreline add atmosphere and depth.
The verso inscription identifies the scene as:
“A view of the famous Cape Trinity Rock on the historic old Saguenay River, P.Q. Canada, as seen from Cape Eternity. Note the size of the big river steamer with that of the towering rock.”
A printed label on the back states: “This is a genuine Water Colour Drawing and a hand carved frame by Willard M. Mitchell.”
The work combines a decorative, almost illustrative handling of the landscape with strong contrasts of cobalt blue, pale watercolour washes, dark conifers, and warm touches of orange and yellow in the foreground. Mitchell’s focus is clearly on the grandeur of the Saguenay cliffs, using the river steamer as a scale marker against the monumental rock formation.
