Peter Cheung’s Through Dust’s Light is a dramatic horse racing painting built around speed, shadow and atmosphere. A jockey leans forward over a dark horse as it charges through a dimly lit track, with a second horse and rider emerging behind at the right. The scene feels momentary and cinematic, caught in the blur of a race under artificial lights.

Cheung uses loose, energetic brushwork to suggest movement rather than describe every detail. The horse’s legs dissolve into strokes of dust, shadow and reflected light, while the rider’s pale helmet and shirt become the brightest focal points. On the left, a row of glowing lamps cuts through the murky green-grey darkness, creating a strong contrast between the illuminated haze and the heavy night surrounding the figures.

The palette is restrained but expressive, dominated by deep greens, blacks, umbers and muted ochres, with flashes of white and yellow catching on the horse, jockey and track lights. The lower foreground has warm brown and orange tones, suggesting churned earth or a dusty riding surface.

Through Dust’s Light feels less like a literal sporting scene and more like an impression of motion, concentration and urgency. Peter Cheung captures the intensity of horse and rider moving through darkness, where light, dust and speed merge into one restless image.
