Robert Ford Gagen, known as RF Gagen was born in London, England in 1847 and immigrated to Ontario with his family in 1862. His art drew inspiration from the vast Canadian terrain, portraying seascapes and landscapes from the Atlantic ocean to the Rocky mountains.
He was particularly known for his ability to depict water as seen in this piece, Rocky Coast. Produced circa 1900 this watercolour perfectly captures the ebb and flow of the ocean as it crashes against the shore. Gagen’s skill is evident in his delicate detail and careful control of light, which adds an atmospheric presence to the piece.
Today, RF Gagen is known as a pioneer Canadian painter and Master watercolour artist.
