Snowed In

Doris McCarthy

Doris McCarthy, who painted this oil on panel piece called "Snowed In", was a Canadian landscape painter, writer and teacher. She was raised in the beaches of Toronto, where her love for art led her to study at the Ontario College of Art. At the college, she was trained by some of the most well-known Canadian artists who were part of the Group of Seven, such as Arthur Lismer and J.E.H. MacDonald.

She was deeply passionate about nature and the environment, where she would hike to remote locations alone for sometimes weeks at a time to find inspiration for her work. At the age of 93, she famously completed a hike in the rocky mountains to get inspiration for her art. She dedicated herself to teaching the younger generation of artists, where for 40 years she was a mentor at Toronto Central Technical School.

She became the vice president and later the first female president of the Ontario Society of Artists.
