Training the Young Driver by Harold Qarliksaq is a 22 x 29 inch linocut on paper that was produced in 1979 and signed on the bottom right. The piece is part of 30 prints in a series, one of which is on display at the Canadian Museum of History. It depicts two sleds, a gang of huskies eagerly pulling them through the snow as cloaked figures cling to the backs. Qarliksaq uses a graphic style of linework to create this simple, clean piece but is still able to capture movement and expression in the faces of the dogs and the sledders themselves. Qarliksaq’s knowledge of the subject matter is immediately apparent.

Born in Nunavut, Canada in 1928, Qarliksaq’s work is characterized by subtle linework that seems to combine multiple perspectives simultaneously, evoking a sense of movement and expression in his work.
