Salmon Fishing Boats, Tofino, BC by Walter Coucill is a 17 x 24 inch watercolour on paper that is protected under museum glass. It is signed on the bottom right and titled and dated on the bottom left of the piece. This intricate seascape depicts an early morning on the coast of British Columbia as the fisherman prepare for their day at sea. Coucill uses extremely fine detail to depict the movement of the water and the tiny fishing vessels that float upon it but has painted the sky in a broad wash adding space and dimension to the piece. The bright yellow of the rising sun is contrasted against the silhouette of mountains in the distance.
Born in 1915, Walter Coucill is a Canadian painter known for his detailed watercolour landscapes depicting scenes from Ontario, Quebec and the maritimes. He passed away in 1982 at the age 67.
