Walter Jackson Coucill (1915 – 1982) was a Canadian artist known for his evocative landscapes and works that capture the quiet of Canada. Born in 1915 in Camden, New Jersey, Coucill moved to Canada in the early part of the 20th century and made his life and career here, establishing himself as a painter and printmaker deeply engaged with Canadian subject matter.
Over several decades he produced a diverse body of work, including watercolours, oils and prints, that reflect both rural and urban scenes, from Canadian wilderness vistas to everyday life in provincial towns.
Coucill’s artistic voice grew out of his long residence in Canada and his sustained engagement with the country’s visual landscape. He taught and exhibited locally while contributing to a broader understanding of mid-century Canadian painting.
