Rockies by James Nicoll is a 14 x 17 inch watercolour and gouache on paper that was produced circa 1970 and is initialled by the artist on the bottom right hand corner. The painting depicts the iconic peaks of the rocky mountains in Alberta, Canada. They tower over the land below, dwarfing the tiny trees below. Nicoll accentuates the crevices and unique rock formations, depicting them in a graphic quality using a strong contrast between light and dark. He employs a colour palette dominated by green and blue with pops of rich burgundy and rust, adding warmth to the scene.
This piece comes to Rookleys from a private collection in Niagara.
