Young Huckleberry by Polish-Canadian artist, Bruno Bobak (1923-2012) is a 19.5 x 13 inch watercolour on paper that is protected by museum glass and signed and dated on the bottom left corner. Produced in 1950, the piece depicts a single huckleberry tree in the center of the composition, the moon shining in the night sky off in the distance. Bobak utilizes flat washes of grey and blue to depict the nighttime landscape. The light from the moon seems to be illuminating the youthful tree in the foreground.
The artist label with the original price of $65 is still on the painting. The piece was displayed in the Art Gallery of Toronto’s, “Women’s Auxilary” in 1950 and is now part of the Rookleys Canadian Art collection.
Bobak himself specialized in watercolour painting but also produced woodcuts in his lifetime. He studied Art at the Art Gallery of Toronto with Group of Seven member, Arthur Lismer after which he became an Official Canadian War Artist and subsequently, an art teacher at the Vancouver School of Art.
