The form spreads horizontally while several pointed elements rise and flare outward, giving the work a strong sense of lift and suspended motion.
The steel has a dark, burnished surface with warm brown and bronze tones that catch the light along the edges and curves. Open spaces between the intersecting forms are just as important as the solid steel, creating shifting negative shapes that change as the sculpture is viewed from different angles.
Although entirely abstract, the work suggests flight, wind and upward movement. Some of the curved forms resemble wings or fins, while others seem to spiral around an invisible centre. The title Up in the Air reinforces this feeling of weightlessness, making the heavy steel appear unusually fluid and animated.
