The dark horse dominates the composition, its body rendered in deep blacks, greys and blue undertones, while the rider’s scarlet jacket and bright yellow accents provide sharp bursts of colour against the smoky background.
The painting is highly atmospheric rather than tightly detailed. Cheung uses broad, expressive brushwork to suggest movement, polish and form, especially in the horse’s flank, tail, harness and lowered head. The rider is partially obscured, almost absorbed into the dark background, which gives the scene a sense of ceremony, mystery and controlled motion. A glowing red horizontal stroke at the left adds energy and helps balance the red of the rider’s uniform.
The horse’s posture is calm but powerful, with its head bowed and reins loosely curving forward in a pale line. The combination of dark tonal masses, flashes of blue, red and yellow, and the hazy grey setting creates a theatrical effect, as though the rider and horse are emerging from an arena or parade ground under subdued light.
