The mare dominates the left side of the composition, her rich chestnut body painted with broad, muscular strokes, while the smaller colt bends toward the water at the lower right. Their shared colouring and white facial markings create a natural visual connection between them.
The setting is bright and autumnal, with golden foliage rising behind the horses and pale grasses surrounding them. Loughheed uses thick, expressive brushwork to build the scene, especially in the yellow leaves, the rough pasture, and the reflections in the water. The paint handling gives the work a lively, immediate quality, with colour and texture carrying much of the emotion.
In Mare and Colt, Robert Elmer Loughheed captures a quiet moment of closeness in nature. The foal’s lowered head and delicate stance contrast with the strength and protectiveness of the mare, creating a gentle pastoral image filled with sunlight, warmth, and affection.
