A dark horse stands harnessed to a traditional caleche, while two bundled passengers sit beneath the curved carriage cover and a driver in dark clothing guides the vehicle forward. Bare trees rise through the composition, their branches threading across softly painted buildings, and the pale architecture behind them gives the scene a quiet, historic atmosphere. The warm ochres of the road contrast with the cool whites, greys, and blues of the town, creating a sense of crisp seasonal light.
The label on the reverse helps anchor the subject more specifically, explaining that one could still ride through the cobbled streets of historic old Quebec in one of these “curious vehicles,” and noting that they were more comfortable than they appeared. That inscription turns the picture into more than a street scene: it becomes a small celebration of Quebec’s enduring traditions and old-world character.
