Panton’s Lake of Bays from Lookout Point, Dorset, c. 1930 is an oil on board measuring 9 x 11 inches. Painted from a high vantage overlooking Lake of Bays, a popular and scenic waterway in Ontario’s Muskoka region known for its forests, rocky outcrops, and shimmering lakes, the work captures the beauty of the land and water. Panton’s brushwork and thoughtful colour harmonies draw the viewer into a moment of early‑20th‑century Canadian wilderness.
Lawrence Arthur Colley Panton (1894–1954), born in Egremont, England, moved to Canada at age 17 and later became a distinguished painter and educator. He studied at the Ontario College of Art and Central Technical School, and eventually taught at several Toronto institutions, culminating as principal of the Ontario College of Art from 1951 until his death. Panton’s early work focused on landscapes, city scenes, and figure studies, evolving later into more stylized landscapes and semi-abstraction. He was an active member of the Ontario Society of Artists, the Royal Canadian Academy, and other art societies, and his work is represented in the National Gallery of Canada, the Art Gallery of Ontario, and the Winnipeg Art Gallery.
