The composition is dominated by churning surf, rendered in layered washes of grey, blue, violet, green, and pale turquoise, with the white of the paper reserved to suggest exploding foam and spray.
The dark brown rocks in the lower left provide a strong visual anchor against the pale, turbulent water. Gagen uses sharp diagonal strokes along the shoreline to emphasize the force and direction of the waves, while softer, overlapping washes farther offshore create a sense of continuous movement across the sea. The muted horizon and subdued sky keep attention focused on the breaking surf in the foreground.
Rather than describing every wave precisely, Gagen builds the scene through transparent colour, broken shapes, and loosely controlled washes, giving the water a convincing sense of weight and motion. The result is an atmospheric coastal study that conveys both the power and the changing colour of the Atlantic shoreline.
