At left, white sails rise softly against the distant waterfront, while a low pier and moored craft lead the eye toward the centre of the composition.
The shoreline curves gently across the foreground, painted in warm ochres, soft browns and cool blue-greys. To the right, dark trees frame a blue-hulled boat pulled close to shore, providing a strong contrast to the delicate, almost misty treatment of the water and sky.
Barnsley uses transparent washes and restrained colour to create a sense of calm and spaciousness. Reflections are suggested with only a few loose strokes, while much of the paper is left light and open, giving the scene an airy quality. The balance between the dark foliage, the boats and the pale sails creates a composition that feels both spontaneous and carefully controlled.
