The composition offers a sweeping perspective over the deeply carved gorges of the Athabasca Glacier, with the Andromeda Glacier visible in the distance. These glaciers are part of one of the largest accumulations of ice south of the Arctic Circle and have long fascinated artists and scientists alike.
The Athabasca River has carved deep, narrow gorges into ancient rock, most notably at Athabasca Falls, where powerful, glacially fed waters rush through sculpted channels. Nearby, the Andromeda Glaciers flow down the slopes of Mount Andromeda, part of the Columbia Icefield. These glaciers, visible from the Icefields Parkway, are known for their dramatic crevasses and icefalls, and feed into the Sunwapta and Athabasca river systems.Nickle renders the rugged topography with confident brushwork, emphasizing the stark contrast between ice, rock, and alpine sky. The palette features bright whites and glacial blues offset by earthy browns with hints of green in the forefront.
This oil on wood panel measures 10 x 12 inches, is signed by the artist on the lower right, and is signed, titled, and dated May 1974 on the reverse.
